The UCI has published a guideline for traffic in races, aimed at all drivers of vehicles in a road cycling event and focussed on improving rider security in races. These guidelines have the support of the Security and Technical Regulations working group, which includes the UCI, the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA), the Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP) and the Association Internationale des Organisateurs de Courses Cyclistes (AIOCC), respectively representing the riders, teams and organisers. In a press release, UCI President Brian Cookson said “This [guideline] is an important step forward which reflects the concrete efforts made by the UCI and all stakeholders to improve the safety of riders at competitions.”
1956 Tour de France winner Roger Walkowiak has died, aged 89. Following the death of Ferdi Kübler last December, Walkowiak was the oldest living Tour winner. Walkowiak’s unexpected but well-deserved victory in that year’s Tour de France was the greatest achievement of a career that also included second place overall in the 1955 Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré and stage wins in the Vuelta a España in 1956 and 1957.
The Tour de France has confirmed that its 105th edition of the race, in 2018, will start in the Pays de la Loire. The westerly region of France first hosted a Grand Départ in 1957. Next year will be the tenth time it has started in that area.
As of February 5th, Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) continues to lead the UCI World Individual ranking.

– Focus on Sonny Colbrelli –
Considered one of Italy’s most promising young riders and currently 15th in the UCI World Ranking, Sonny Colbrelli is a 25-year-old professional with the Bahrain-Merida team. A gifted racer in small group sprints and fast uphill finishes in both Classics and stage races, he turned pro in 2012 with the Colnago-CSF squad. Colbrelli has yet to notch up a win at UCI WorldTour level but he has taken victories in prestigious events like the 2016 GP Citta di Lugano and the 2015 GP Bruno Beghelli. Arguably his most notable result to date, though, was not a victory, but third place in the 2016 Amstel Gold Race.
